Baby Yoga & Massage

Jo Ormond, a qualified Yoga Teacher for adults and babies and Baby Massage Therapist, accredited by The Royal College of Midwives offers a variety of baby-led services in Gloucestershire.

Touch is the first sense to be developed in the womb and is the last sense to leave us

My baby yoga and massage classes are based on the principle that nurturing touch is a fundamental part of a baby’s well-being. My classes help to teach parents an easy and enjoyable routine that enables them to communicate through touch. Touch is the one sense that is developed before we are born.

Group Classes

The five week courses are situated in Coopers Edge, Gloucester, where a new section of the body is covered each week.  By the end of the course, you will be able to give your baby a full body massage.

Babies from 8 weeks old (post GP check up) to crawling can take part in the course. Mums, dads, nannies very welcome!

The classes are held at The Edge Community Centre in Coopers Edge, which has free parking and an on-site cafe.  The Centre includes baby friendly facilities such as baby changing and a hot water urn.

What to expect from my classes

The classes are small, limited to 9 babies, to providing an intimate space for you and your little one.

All movements are focused on your baby’s anatomy, where you will guide your baby in each pose and movement.

Every class finishes with a relaxation session for both you and the baby.

Baby Yoga

Baby yoga is an interactive routine with movements that work well to strengthen and tone your baby’s body. The movements include gentle stretching, strengthening exercises and breathing by encouraging your baby to imitate your breathing patterns.

Each class will be tailored to help your baby reach developmental milestones (rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and walking) quicker by learning what muscles to use to make their bodies do what they want. But most importantly, because our yoga is performed through loving interaction, it helps your baby’s brain development at the time of most intense growth.

Baby Massage

Baby massage can help parents give their precious baby the best loving start in life to promote health and happiness. The immediate benefits of regular baby massage include a marked improvement in sleep duration & quality, improved circulation, healthier muscle tone and a feeling of deep relaxation. It can alleviate symptoms of colic, other digestive conditions and teething. Baby massage provides a wonderful sense of calmness for the baby and parent through the reduction of stress causing hormones.

The aim of my baby massage classes is to teach basic, safe strokes to parents whilst building their confidence in touching their babies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are the classes suitable for?
Babies from 8 weeks old (post GP check up) to crawling can take part in the course. Mums, dads, nannies very welcome!

How do I book and pay for class?
Please ensure you book online before coming to class, once you have booked a class successfully you will receive an email notification to confirm your booking.

What if I arrive late?
We understand that it’s pretty hard trying to get anywhere on time when you have a baby, so we are not strict on start times for this class. You are welcome to come in at any point during the class, and will hopefully benefit from some yoga and welcoming chat with us and other mums.

What should I wear?
Being a new mum myself, there is zero expectation for you to arrive looking fresh! Come along as you are and wear what you feel most comfortable in.  If you are able to do so, you will be sat on the floor with your baby, however there are chairs available if you would like to use one.

What should I bring to the class?
Just bring yourself, your baby, nappies, milk (if applicable), suitable clothing and maybe some water.  Feel free to bring blankets, toys, and anything else you or your baby may need.

Can I change my baby or feed during a class?
Yes! There are changing facilities on site but you are welcome to change your baby during the class on the mat too (with your changing mat on top).  Babies may become hungry during the session, you are welcome to feed your baby either on the mat or sitting on a chair in the room.

When can we do this at home?
You can do this at home with your baby after the sessions and I provide all the handouts for you to use as a reminder/guide. You will find your own routine. Some people give baby a quick leg massage while having a nappy change if you have time, others use Baby Massage as part of a bedtime routine. Just make sure that baby is alert, awake and happy to take part.

Who can join in?
Anyone can join in with our classes, these classes are a brilliant way to help you bond with baby. We always welcome both parents should they wish to both take part. You can take it in turns or just simply observe the other parent.

What ability are the classes suitable for?
During our Baby Yoga classes, parents will learn simple breathing exercises and simple stretches. You do not need to have any previous experience with yoga and the classes are primarily for Baby.

How much is the course?
The course is £50 per term, which will consist of 5 sessions.

Is there parking at your venues?
The Edge Community Centre
There is a car park outside the venue however it does get quite busy, alternatively you can park on the road.  If it’s easier for you, you are welcome to bring your pram.  Please note: there is a bus lane outside of the venue, so please make sure you follow a sat nav so you can avoid this, it is not very obvious!  Please see below a map to show the bus lane location.
